SPED Life Skills programs offer every student the opportunity to learn functional skills that will maximize individual independence throughout the school years and into adulthood. Life Skills programs focus on helping each student successfully navigate their school and work environments by acquiring skills to live by such as self-hygiene, functional academics, social and behavioral learning, and vocational adaptations. It is the belief of Bend-La Pine Schools that every student is capable of becoming a contributing member of our community.

A staff of School Psychologists are assigned to work in each school building to assess the academic and psychological/social needs of the students who are having learning or behavior problems and/or are suspected of being disabled. Behavior Support

Home & Hospital
The Bend-La Pine Special Programs Department offers an array of programs and services for those special education students k-21 that are demonstrating challenging behaviors. These specialized programs focus on the unique needs of the student with emphasis on improving behavior and social skills so that students may access the regular education program more successfully. This staff assists teachers in writing positive behavior intervention plans which become part of a student's IEP. They also offer consultation support to both teachers and parents.

Some students, due to medical issues, are unable to attend school. In such cases, individual instruction is provided in the home or hospital environment. There must be a doctor's statement that the student is unable to attend school due to medical issues, and an IEP team must meet to temporarily change the IEP. State education code directs schools to provide individual home/hospital instruction by a certificated teacher for such students.

Section 504 Support
Speech & Language
Individuals are protected under Section 504 of the Federal Civil Rights statute if they have a disability that substantially limits one or more major life activities. This section is separate from the Federal Individuals with Disability Acts. However, most children who qualify for Special Education are automatically covered under Section 504. The Bend-La Pine Schools implements Section 504 on a site by site basis. A team will meet to consider a student's needs and will request assessments if necessary and develop an "Accommodation Plan". This plan will articulate what accommodations are necessary for the disabled student to assess her/his education. Each student has a 504 Coordinator located in their school.
The Special Programs Department manages a team of highly trained Speech and Language Specialists, many who are aided by assistants specially trained as Speech and Language Assistants. This staff implements best practices strategies to assist students with speech and language needs. All services are guided by the IEP process. Many of the services are provided within the student's classroom or in a small group setting. Some students require more intensive or individual work, so they are pulled from the regular educational setting for better suited off-campus services. Our Speech Specialists recognize that there is significant value in providing services through consultation with the regular education teacher, special education teacher and family.
