November 2009
Hello Mountaineers!
Happy November. It has been another great month here at
Cascade!
School staff have been busy developing strategies to meet
our individual department goals that support one or more of the following
school goals during our Professional development Wednesday sessions, as well as
at other times:
1.
By June 2010, at least 93% of all students will meet or
exceed Mathematics state benchmark assessment standards.
2.
By June 2010, at least 75% of all students will meet or
exceed Writing state benchmark assessment standards.
3.
By June 2010, at least 93% of all students will meet or
exceed Reading state benchmark assessment standards.
4.
Promote the social and emotional growth of all
students, as measured by behavior referrals, attendance, surveys, and
participation in activities.
We are pleased that our Math and Writing Studios have gone
very well. These studios include a
group of our teachers collaboratively creating or modifying a lesson. Following
the lesson, the teachers have met to review the data collected and implement
improvements.
In October we administered the EXPLORE test to all 8th
graders. This test provides an early indicator of college readiness. The
EXPLORE program consists of four tests-English, Mathematics, Reading and
Science, along with a detailed interest inventory. EXPLORE results will help students know 1) where they stand
academically 2) what career paths and educational paths are available and 3)
how to develop a plan for meeting career and academic goals. Results will be available in
January. Staff will be reviewing
scores with students in the classroom, and they will also review resources to
further explore career possibilities.
In keeping pace with providing a healthy school environment,
please remember that if students are ill, they must not return to school until
they have been fever free for at least 24 hours without fever reducing
medications. Also, please be sure
they are rested and up for the rigor of the school day before they return. If you have any questions or concerns,
please call me at 383.6230. You
may also reach me via e-mail: Michael.hecker@bend.k12.or.us.
I wish you health and happiness for the upcoming
Thanksgiving break.
